National Health Center Week - August 7-13, 2022

Community health centers are a vital source of care for many Americans, but they have historically faced funding cuts and long wait times for services. Health centers are the “safety net” for more than 30 million Americans each year, providing quality medical, dental, and behavioral health care services.  Through their care and compassion, they empower patients to overcome barriers to treatment and put them on a path toward better health.

This year, the National Association of Community Health Centers organizes the National Health Center Week to celebrate the accomplishments within their communities as well as spread awareness about the importance of community health centers. The NACHC is also advocating for emergency and long-term funding for community health centers so they can provide services for years to come.

Why It Matters

Health care is a right, not a privilege. Yet, many Americans still struggle to access the health services they need. Nearly 4 million Americans remain locked out of Medicaid expansion, and millions find it difficult to afford prescription drugs, mental health services, and preventive screenings.

Serving over 22 million patients a year at more than 9,000 sites in rural and urban communities across America, health centers are committed to improving the health of underserved and vulnerable populations through affordable access to quality health care.

Access to quality health care is essential to the well-being of our communities. But for many Americans, that access is unequal. Disparities in access have real consequences that impact people's lives — from those with chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes, who often experience the worst health outcomes, to women of color who face higher maternal mortality rates than white women.

Federally funded health centers can help. They provide medical services — particularly to individuals living in poverty, rural communities, and communities of color — through nearly 1,400 community-based organizations operating over 14,000 service delivery sites. Patients can influence decision-making as clinics operate under a patient-majority governing board.

Observing National Health Center Week

You can tie up with local organizations to spread awareness about health centers. Advocate for their mission, and inform others about the importance of taking care of our health and how they can get access to affordable healthcare through these centers. This week, encourage family members and friends to head to your local center and get a check-up done to detect any potential illness and take corrective measures if need be.

You can also look for volunteer opportunities during the week. Most centers have many programs running and need help with administrative or logistical support.
