Casey, a 36-year-old mother of 3, is recovering from a routine hysterectomy in the PACU. She was admitted to the post-op unit, where vital signs are typically taken intermittently. Just 90 minutes after her arrival in the care unit, her vital signs dropped between her spot check monitoring –Casey’s cNIBP dropped dangerously low. All other vital signs were normal. ViSi Mobile's continuous monitoring system alerted the nurses, allowing them to intervene immediately and save her life.
“I felt the ringing in my ears, and that was it. I felt my head ringing, and I don’t remember anything after that,” says Casey.
Her blood pressure continued to drop, and a code had to be called within a few minutes because Casey had passed out. The nurses were able to monitor that on the ViSi and see how she was deteriorating, and they were able to catch it very quickly. Casey was roused and treated, and she was returned to surgery to correct post-op bleeding.
“I am thankful that she had it on. It made it more convenient because she could rest and I could rest. I was better off when she started stabilizing and made our stay more comfortable,” says Casey’s mother.
Casey was quickly stabilized and discharged one day later.
The Sotera Visi Mobile is designed to provide continuous surveillance monitoring for patients in general care settings, bridging the gap between intermittent spot checking and ICU intensive monitoring. With continuous surveillance monitoring of key vital signs, early recognition and detection of patient deterioration enable clinicians to make timely and effective interventions.
Advanced monitoring is standard in ICUs, yet nearly half of all adverse events in hospitalized patients occur in the general care ward, where current monitoring protocols typically consist of intermittent spot checks about every 4-8 hours.
This leaves patients unmonitored most of the time, where subtle abnormalities in vital signs go undetected until complications arise. Studies have shown that continuous vital signs monitoring is associated with significant improvements in key clinical outcomes in patients treated in the general care ward.
The ViSi Mobile comprehensive vital signs monitoring system keeps clinicians connected to their patients, whether in bed, in transport, or while ambulating, because even one failure-to-rescue is one too many.
